I received my B.A. in Spanish and Intl. Studies from Indiana University Bloomington in 2003. AmericorpsVISTA volunteer for 2 years with immigrant population in Louisville, KY. Additionally, I spent an academic year abroad in Madrid, Spain, studying at a local university with Spanish students. I have traveled to Spain many times, lived in Peru for 3 months, travelled to Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, as well as lived in Istanbul, Turkey for one month.
Experience
My focus as a tutor is to listen to your goals, provide you with the tools necessary to increase your Spanish language skills, and be a patient, gentle guide in your learning process. Language can be scary or frustrating to many at the beginning stages, and I work to share my academic and life lessons so that you, too, can confidently reach your Spanish goals. I am open to assisting students that need to increase their school scores, adult learners who may be traveling abroad or just have an interest, and those that wish to really refine their communication and move to a higher level. My experience: I have a Bachelors Degree in Spanish and have high level fluency (non native speaker) in both written and spoken language. I have utilized the language on almost of daily basis for 10 years after graduation, and I have tutored both children and adults, in Spanish and in English. From my travels abroad, I learned how to utilize not only my grammar skills but also useful, colloquial phrases that apply to everyday life. Domestically, I spent 5 years working with the Hispanic population in the social service industry. I have held management positions and handle my interactions both kindly and professionally. Those 5 years have perhaps been my greatest lesson as I had to use my interpretation skills as well as master daily conversation. This has given me a broader perspective of how to learn and teach applicable communication skills. I am available to meet some evenings and weekends.
